Children love to pretend to be Firefighters, Doctors, Construction Workers, Musicians, Artists and anything grown-up. These Doctors and Dentists Activities are a perfect way to introduce kids to these brave community helpers that work to make life better for others.
Doctors & Dentists Activities
Creative Space
Play dough, stamps, scissors, lacing beads and cards, puzzles and blocks are set out for the children to choose from, and get creative during this 30 minute period.
Doctors & Dentists Circle Time
Everyday during Circle Time we do the morning routine, which includes the Calendar and ‘Number, Color, Shape and Letter of the week’. We then read a story, sing a few songs and do a group activity.
On every Monday we change the ‘Classroom Helpers’ Classroom Jobs. Each child has a name card on a popsicle stick, and they get to choose their job of the week.
Doctors & Dentists Circle Time Activities
Activity 1: Weekend News
Every Monday morning each child gets a chance to talk about their weekend and what they did. The children then draw a picture in the ‘weekend news’ journal, and the teacher writes down what they have
said.
Activity 2: Word Cards Sorting
After cutting and laminating the word cards, show the children all the cards. Draw a Venn diagram on the board. Stick the ‘Doctor’ heading in the one circle and the Dentist one in the other circle. Now decide with the children which apparatus are used by only doctors, and which ones are used by only dentists. The pictures of the apparatus that both use, goes in the middle of the diagram.
Activity 3: Brushing Teeth Demonstration
Ask the children at the beginning of the week to bring their toothbrushes to school. Demonstrate the correct way to brush your teeth. Let everyone look at themselves in hand mirrors or the mirrors at the sink. Everyone brushes their teeth.
Activity 4: Remote Control
Make a pretend remote control and get your class to think of actions for each button on the remote control. Fast forward, rewind, pause etc. Now play papers, scissors, stone. Whoever wins gets to control the ‘remote control’ and thus the whole class.
Activity 5: Sail Around the World
Mark ‘North’, ‘South’, ‘East’ and ‘West’ on the four walls of your class. The children pretend to be on a boat in the middle of the class. Shout out a direction, all the children ‘sail’ to that wall, touch it, and return to the middle of the class. You can sail around the whole world (touch all 4 walls) or sail from North to East etc.

Doctors & Dentists Literacy Activities
Activity 1: A Visit to the Doctor/ Dentist Cut-and-Paste
Ask the children if they have ever visited the doctor. Why?. What do they remember from the hospital or clinic? What did the doctor use?
After laminating and cutting out the colored ‘A visit to the Doctor’ sheets, show the children all the cards. Then hand them out and ask, ‘Who has the picture of the stethoscope?’ Hand out the children’s cut-and-paste activity sheets.
Children listen to the Teachers’ directions to color the picture, for example ‘Color the picture of the Stethoscope blue’. Repeat with the ‘Going to the Dentist’ Activity Sheet. Children cut and paste the pictures.
Center 1: Upper & Lower Case matching
After the teacher laminated and cut out the pictures of the band-aids, the children match these to the correct upper case letter on the boy or girl’s body.
Center 2: Beginning Sounds Magnetic Letters Sorting
Laminate and stick all the cards on a whiteboard. Children use magnetic letters of the same beginning sound as each card to sort on the cards.
Center 3: Wooden Alphabet Blocks
I always use these blocks as one of the centers as it is easy for the kids to use it with no assistance. Children can use these wooden letter blocks to write their names or other words around the class or even just stack them into towers.
Doctors & Dentists Math Activities
Activity 1: Marshmallow/ Cotton Wool Graph
Children use cotton wool, small marshmallows, or pieces of tissue made into a little ball (to look like teeth). Children stick these onto the page to make a graph.
Activity 2: Gross-Motor Math Games
Take the children outside and play hopscotch. You can also write numbers 1 – 10 on the floor and play various games with that (everyone run and stand on the number, which number is missing etc.)
Center 1: Write it, Tally it, Add it, Write it
Use a dice and white cubes (to look like teeth). Children throw the dice and write that number in the first block under ‘Add it!’. They throw the dice again and write the number in the second block. Now they ‘Make it!’ by using white cubes in the ten frame. They then count the cubes, ‘Write it!’ in the top left corner and tally it.
Center 2: Constructing Numbers
I love this center as a back up plan. Click on the link and head over to the Amazon store to have a look. You will not regret it!
Doctors & Dentists Science Craft Activities
We did not have enough time this week to complete this activity, but I am sure it will be a great one. It’s not exactly very ‘Science-y’, but the kids will definitely have a ball.
- Cut out the tooth and paste it onto different colored construction paper.
- Use an old toothbrush to ‘brush’ the tooth with white paint. Make sure all the bits are covered.
Doctors & Dentists Dramatic Play
Included are:
- A ‘Patient Information’ form
- Labels for the different areas and objects in a clinic
- An Eye Chart
- Prescription Form
Doctors & Dentists Arts & Crafts
Cut out the doctor’s bag and the pictures. Color the bag black with a red cross. Fold double and staple together. Now put all the doctor’s equipment in the ‘bag’ and pretend to heal teddy bears etc.
Doctors & Dentists Cooking Activity
I found this awesome activity over at mrs.happyhomemaker.com. It’s super easy and fun and the kids can do most of it by themselves. Simply give each child a spoonful of peanut butter, some small marshmallows and 2 thin apple slices and let them create their own apple and marshmallows teeth 🙂
Phonics
Phonics is taught in order from A – Z and we spend the first semester on learning all the letter sounds. The second semester is spent on Word Families and Sight Words. We learn 2 letter sounds a week through songs, crafts, centers, cut-and-paste activities, tracing & coloring. This week we will learn about the letters Qq & Rr
.
Monday: Letter Introduction
Every Monday, the teacher introduces the letters of the week. We watch the Jolly Phonics Letters S & T songs and do the actions, then listen to the Bounce Patrol letters S & T songs. Afterwards, we play the letters Ss & Tt games on Starfall.
The teacher then shows the children the word cards and ask them to name the pictures and to place it under the correct letter on the word wall.
Tuesday & Thursday: Letter Crafts
Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for Letter Crafts. The children all love these. For this week we did the ‘S is for Snake’ and ‘T is for Tree’ Letter Crafts.
