Learning about the 5 senses is an exciting thematic unit for young learners as they are curious about the world around them and use their senses to explore and learn. These Sense of Taste & The 5 senses Review Activities will make learning so much more fun.

Creative Space
Play dough, stamps, scissors, lacing beads and cards, puzzles and blocks are set out for the children to choose from, and get creative during this 30 minute period.
Sense of Touch & The 5 Senses Review Circle Time
Everyday during Circle Time we do the morning routine, which includes the Calendar and ‘Number, Color, Shape and Letter of the week’. We then read a story, sing a few songs and do a group activity.
On every Monday we change the ‘Classroom Helpers’ Classroom Jobs. Each child has a name card on a popsicle stick, and they get to choose their job of the week.
Sense of Touch & The 5 Senses Review Circle Time Activities
Activity 1: Weekend News
Every Monday morning each child gets a chance to talk about their weekend and what they did. The children then draw a picture in the ‘weekend news’ journal, and the teacher writes down what they have said.
Activity 2: Pocket Chart Sorting Activity
Stick the headings on the wall or whiteboard with blu-tac. Hand out the picture cards to the children and ask them one by one to come up and stick their picture under the correct heading.
Activity 3: Clapping Game
First, clap your hands together, then, clap together your right hands, then your left hands, Say the number “one” as you go, repeat, but give the same number of claps as the number you are on, the goal is to get as high of a number as you can without messing up.
Activity 4: Fruit Salad
Each player is assigned one of the following senses: hearing, touch, smell, taste, sight. The facilitator will stand in the middle of the circle and call out one of the senses. All players who are assigned that sense will stand up, run around the circle, and sit down in their original spot.
Activity 5: Outside Twister
Take the children for a walk outside. Draw different shapes on the ground with chalk. Ask children to touch a shape with their left hand. Then another one with their right foot without taking their hand off.

Sense of Touch & The 5 Senses Review Literacy Activities
Activity 1: Mr. Potato Head Paper Craft
Review the 5 senses. Give all the children a brown piece of paper and show them how to draw a potato shape. Help them to cut it out. Children paste the shape onto another colored sheet of paper. Show the children how to draw 2 arms and hands and a mouth on white paper. Children cut this out and paste it onto Mr. Potato head as shown in the picture. Add some googly eyes, a nose and ears.
Hand out the labels that you will find at the end of this free lesson plan. Children cut out the words and label the picture.
Activity 2: The 5 Senses Sorting Cut-and-Paste
Review the 5 senses with the children. Go through all the pictures on the activity sheet. If it is a class with ESL Learners, you can ask them to color each picture according to instruction e.g., ‘Color the sun yellow”. Children cut the pictures out and paste it under the correct heading.
Activity 3: My 5 Senses Printable Book
Children draw something they can hear, touch, smell, taste and see on each page of the printable book. The teacher asks them what they drew and write the words underneath each picture.
Activity 4: Blue Show-and-Tell
Every Thursday is Show-and-Tell. Because the color of the week this week is blue, I sent a note home to the parents on Monday to remind them to let their child bring in something blue on Thursday. This is what the kids in my class brought in.
Sense of Touch & The 5 Senses Review Math Activities
There are not too much you could do with the Sense of Touch and Math, so I thought put together a few centers to practice one-on-one correspondence and introduce division through sharing equally. There are also activity sheets that covers graphing, counting, recognizing numbers 1 – 10 and extending patterns.
Center 1: Roll & Cover/ Color Center
Cut out the dice cards, senses counters and picture mats and laminate. This activity can be played individually, in pairs or in groups. Children throw the dice, check on the dice card which number corresponds with which sense, and cover a picture that uses that sense with a counter or color it on the coloring sheet.

Center 2: Sharing equally
Share the raisins evenly: Give each child a handful of raisins. Ask them to divide the raisins evenly into first two groups and then 4. Show them how to put one raisin in the first square and then one in the next. One back in the first and then one in the next. Continue until all raisins are done.
Activity Sheet 1: Numbers Coloring
The teacher shows the children how to count the pictures by crossing a line through each. Then find the numeral and color it the same color as the pictures.
Activity Sheets 2: Patterns and Pictograph
Activity Sheet 3: Addition
Show the children how to count on their fingers. Then show them how to add two groups of objects. Complete the activity sheet.

Sense of Touch Science Activity: Texture Board
What you need:
- Sandpaper
- Felt
- Cotton Wool
- Contact Paper
- Bubble Wrap
- Pipe Cleaners
- Crepe Paper
- Velcro
- Anything you can find with different textures
- Future board or Cardboard (about an A4 size for each child)
Time for the activity:
Take the kids for a walk outside. Ask them to touch different surfaces (a tree trunk, the ground, a wall, a leaf, a brick etc.) Ask them what all these things feel like. Explain that we need our hands and skin to feel different textures and temperatures.
Back in class, pass around some of the materials you gathered. Ask the children what these feel like. Give a square sized cut of each type of material to each child. They paste these onto their boards and now have their very own texture boards to take home!
Phonics
Phonics is taught in order from A – Z and we spend the first semester on learning all the letter sounds. The second semester is spent on Word Families and Sight Words. We learn 2 letter sounds a week through songs, crafts, centers, cut-and-paste activities, tracing & coloring. This week we will learn about the letters Oo & Pp
.
Monday: Letter Introduction
Every Monday, the teacher introduces the letters of the week. We watch the Jolly Phonics Letters O & P songs and do the actions, then listen to the Bounce Patrol letters O & P songs. Afterwards, we play the letters Oo & Pp games on Starfall.
The teacher then shows the children the word cards and ask them to name the pictures and to place it under the correct letter on the word wall.
Tuesday & Thursday: Letter Crafts
Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for Letter Crafts. The children all love these. For this week we did the ‘O is for Octopus’ and ‘P is for Parrot’ Letter Crafts.
Wednesday: Tracing Letters and Beginning Sounds Centers
Friday: Beginning Sounds Sorting and Cut-and-Paste
