The Weather Themed Activities were perfect for this time of year, Spring Time! The children loved learning about the water cycle, making a windsock, enjoying clouds in jello jars, learning about thunderstorms, completing a weather report book and taking part in the Math and Literacy centers.
Weather Themed Activities
Creative Space
Play dough, stamps, scissors, lacing beads and cards, puzzles and blocks are set out for the children to choose from, and get creative during this 30 minute period.
Weather Themed Circle Time
Every day during Circle Time we do the morning routine, which includes the Calendar and ‘Number, Color, Shape and Letter of the week’. We then read a story, sing a few songs and do a group activity.
On every Monday we change the ‘Classroom Helpers’ Classroom Jobs. Each child has a name card on a popsicle stick, and they get to choose their job of the week.
Weather Themed Circle Time Activities
Activity 1: Weekend News
Every Monday morning each child gets a chance to talk about their weekend and what they did. The children then draw a picture in the ‘weekend news’ journal, and the teacher writes down what they have said.
Activity 2: Word & picture Cards Games
Game 1:
Print 2 copies for each sheet. Cut out all the cards and paste on colored paper. Laminate. Put all the cards with the words in the middle of the circle, face up. Hand out the cards with the pictures. Point to the word cards one by one, talking about the beginning and ending sounds. Ask children, who has a picture that begins with the sound /c/ for example. Cloud and Cold starts with /C/. Now what is their ending sounds? /D/. Sound out the words and let the children decide what the word says. The child with the correct card places it on the word card.
Game 2:
Place the word cards face up on one side and the pictures face up on the other side. Read the words and name the pictures as you place them. Now turn all the cards face down. Children take turns picking up a card from each side. If they match, they get to keep the card. If not, they put the cards back in the same place.
Game 3:
Put all the picture cards face up in the center of the circle. Ask children to turn around and close their eyes. Remove one of the cards. The children turn back and open their eyes. The child that names the missing card correctly gets to keep it. Continue until there are only 2 cards left.
Activity 3: Plastic Fruit & Vegetables
Have some plastic fruit and plastic vegetables ready with two baskets (labelled ‘Fruits’ and ‘Vegetables’. Take one at a time, discus it and ask the children to put it into the correct basket.
