Fruits & Veggies Themed Activities

The Fruits & Veggies Themed Activities were perfect for this time of year, Spring Time! The children loved learning about plant parts we eat, making a food journal, observing plants growing, pretending to visit a fruits & veggies shop and drawing and painting vegetables.

Fruits & Veggies Themed Circle Time

Every day during Circle Time we do the morning routine, which includes the Calendar and ‘Number, Color, Shape and Letter of the week’. We then read a story, sing a few songs and do a group activity.

On every Monday we change the ‘Classroom Helpers’ Classroom Jobs. Each child has a name card on a popsicle stick, and they get to choose their job of the week.

Fruits & Veggies Themed Circle Time Activities

Activity 1: Weekend News

Every Monday morning each child gets a chance to talk about their weekend and what they did. The children then draw a picture in the ‘weekend news’ journal, and the teacher writes down what they have said.

Activity 2: Fruits & Veggies Riddle Cards

Place all the riddle cards face down in the middle of the circle. Children take turns to pick it up, then give it to the teacher. Teacher reads what’s on the card. The first child that guesses the correct fruit/ veggie keeps the cards.

Activity 3: Fruit Salad

Divide all the players into three groups of fruit by going around the circle and naming them either apple, orange or pear. One child sits in the centre of the circle and calls the name of a fruit. If he calls out apples, everyone who is that fruit must get up quickly and change places. The child in the center must try and take one of the other children’s spots.

Activity 5: Apple, Apple, Banana

All the players, except the first person who is It, sit in a circle. It walks around the circle, tapping each player on the head, saying “apple” each time until he decides to tap someone and say “banana.” That person becomes the ‘banana’ and runs after It, trying to tag him before It can take his seat.

Place all of the call-out cards in a bucket, hat or bag and mix them up. The caller should select a card without looking. Have players mark the square with a picture of the same fruit/ vegetable with a chip when they hear a word that appears on their card. Players shout “BINGO!” when they get a full line (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) or a full card.

Activity 4: Food Journal

My Colorful Food Journal

During lunch or snack time, ask the children to look at their food and to notice all the different colors. Meat can be brown or white, vegetables can be green or orange or yellow or purple etc. Let the children talk about all the different colored foods they eat every day. Ask them if they notice any patterns? A lot of vegetables are green etc. When they have all eaten up and after quiet time, the children can ‘draw’ what they had for lunch, count all the different colors and record the numbers.

Fruits & Veggies Themed Math Activities

Center 1: I Spy

Count the pictures on the ‘I Spy’ Sheet’. Color the correct number of blocks on the graph. Compare.

Center 2: Fruits & veggies Board game

Each child throws a dice. The child with the highest number starts first. Throw the dice. Move that many spaces forward.  Look at the space you landed on and say the name of the fruit/vegetable out loud. Now pick up a ‘Take a Chance’ card. If the picture on the card is the same as the picture you landed on; you get to keep the cards. If the picture on the card and the background color is the same as the space you landed on, you get to keep the card and throw the dice again. Continue until all players have finished the game. The one with the most cards wins.

Fruits & Veggies Themed Art

I found this super cute Vegetables painting over at paintinginspired.blogspot.com. The children draw a line horizontally across the centre of the page. They then draw and color a radish, carrot and yam underneath the line (with crayons). When they are done with that, they draw the leaves and color crayons and then paint with brown watercolor below the line and blue water color above the line.

Fruits & Veggies Themed Dramatic Play

Print out and laminate the labels and shopping cards. In my class I asked the children to build their own vegetable store shelves using the wooden blocks. They then separated the plastic fruits & vegetables and labelled the shelves. The children then each got a shopping card and bought all the fruits & vegetables that were on the cards.
