Pre-K Sight Words

Sight Words help promote reading speed, fluency and comprehension. Children will be able to focus on deciphering the meaning of only the new words. There are a lot of fun ways to teach Pre-K Sight Words.

In my class, I integrate the Pre-K Sight Words into the monthly themes, but I have also made 5 Sight Word only packs. These are to ensure that they all know those sight words like the back of their hands!

I use each pack over a period of 4 weeks during our Phonics block (about 30mins long). Each pack includes an Emergent Reader, Center Games and Worksheets.

Pre-K Sight Words Packs

Activity 1: Go, Go, Go! Emergent Reader

Print out and assemble the emergent reader (one per child). Read the story to the children first and then hand out the readers. Ask the children to read the book with you. Don’t forget to ask them to put their fingers on each word as you read the sentences. Write all the sight words on the whiteboard or stick the word cards somewhere everyone can see it.

Now ask the children to look for each sight word in their book and to color these. So for example, everyone has to find the word ‘look’ on every page and color it green. Do this for all the sight words. When they are done, the children can color the pictures and then read the books back to the teachers individually.

Activity 2: Pocket Chart sentences

Write the sentences on the whiteboard and hand out the words from the pocket chart sentences to the children. Read the sentences on the board (don’t forget to put your finger under each word as you read it). The children look at the words in their hands, and if it matches the word on the board, they come to the front and stick their word over the word on the whiteboard.

Activity 3: Roll, Read & Write! Center

In this center, the children will roll a dice and look at the words on their recording sheet and the picture of the dice next to it. They have to find the word that has the same number that they just threw on the dice, and write the word down. The children can continue until they have written all the words, or until one word reaches the bottom of the recording sheet.

Sight Words Printables & Activities

Activity 4: Build a Rocket!

After you laminated and cut out the rocket pieces with the words on, give these to the children. Hand out the ‘Build a Rocket’ Dice information sheet and the A4 sheet with the picture of the rocket on it.

The children then take turns to throw the dice (in a clockwise direction). They look at the number on the dice and the word next to it, and see if they have a piece of the rocket with that word on it. If they do, they place it on the rocket, and if they don’t the next child throws the dice. The winner is the first child who has no pieces left.

Activity 5: Shape Hunt Write the Room Center

Cut out and laminate the sight word shapes. During Center time, place these all over the room. Ask the children to find the words, look at the shapes they are on, and then to record the word on the shape next to the correct shape on their recording sheets.

Sight Words Printables & Activities

Activity 6: Spin, Read & Write! Center

Assemble the spinner and during center time, children take turns to spin the arrow. They look at the word, then write the word under the correct column. They can continue until all the spaces have been written in, or until one of the words reaches the bottom first.

Sight Words Printables & Activities

Activity 7: Worksheet

On the worksheet the children will look at the word, read it and say it out loud, trace it, color it, spell it, write it, find it and then cut letters out of an old magazine and glue it on.
